I’m 35 with virtually no verifiable employment history. Suddenly have in demand skill set. How do I get past HR prehire check?

What's my best strategy for explaining decades long gaps on my employment history? I wish I could just say I woekd for myself or was an independent contractor, but my friend just did that on his application to this same hospital and HR made him submit his w2's.

TLDR: I have a absolutely terrible resume with decades long gaps. Suddenly have skills in high demand. Want to work at a specific place, but I'm worried about getting through HR with such a bad employment history. Please advise
