My coworker told me today that our manager called him into his office after I left work for the day to tell him that we need to stop watching videos at our desk while we are at work. He also said that I would be called in next Monday to have the same conversation.
Most of the time while I am at my desk I have one earbud in to listen to the lo-fi girl on youtube while I work. If I do have a video up, like twitch or youtube, I usually just make the window small and put it in the corner of my second monitor. The problem that myself and my coworker have compared to other people in the department is that our desks are right outside the 2 management offices. Our desks are also set up so that our backs are pointed at the managers doors. So when either of them come out I don't see them coming and when I finally hear them past I'll quickly close the window. I do my best to not get caught, but I know they have seen me with videos playing several times.
I get that from their perspective it looks like I'm just watching videos and not getting work done. But I am good at my job and I believe they know that. I make sure that the projects I am working on get done on time and done to the standard that they expect. I am more than capable of working at a high standard while also having a twitch stream going.
The Monday conversation with my manager won't go badly for me. I won't be written up or given an ultimatum to stop watching videos or get fired. I will most likely just say that I will stop watching videos and make sure that I am doing my work.
Is there anything else I could say to help my case? I don't expect to come out with him agreeing that I can do whatever I want so long as I get my job done.
