I got promoted to my current position about six months ago. Now my boss is expecting me to complete a course in order to keep this position, even though this was never mentioned at the time of my promotion. The company will be paying for the course, but I have to complete it on my own time. I have been told that it will take about six months to complete if I work on it every day. They recommended that I use my lunch break to work on it.
I like my job, but I have no interest in pursuing a long-term career in this industry and even less interest in giving away 100+ hours of my own time in order to do so. I told them that I cannot commit to taking the course right now due to time constraints, so now they are researching similar courses that take less time to complete. We have a meeting next week to discuss options. They mentioned that I will be demoted to my old position if I cannot take any courses.
So I guess I’m spending this weekend looking for a new job. I’m hoping that I can score a job or at least some interviews before the meeting next week. Wish me luck.
