So I’ve been working at this independent living retirement community for about 2 months now as a housekeeper. The job itself isn’t too bad, it it physically exhausting but so are many other jobs. Anyway there’s only one housekeeper on each floor and there are three floors. I have the second floor. Each day we are given a list of residents who need housekeeping Monday through Friday, and by the end of the day Friday every resident on our floor should’ve received housekeeping that week. Rinse and repeat for the next week. We are also responsible for any other rooms on the floor such as laundry rooms, trash rooms, my floor has a library, so on. So we have a lot of responsibility as it is. Now if one of us calls I’m sick guess what, it’s up to the other two housekeepers to cover for whoever called off. I didn’t know this until last week when my coworker on the third floor called off with the flu. It was a nightmare bouncing back and fourth between floors and doing extra rooms while my coworker did her other rooms for the day. By the time we were done it was about 5 o clock, we usually leave around 3-3:30. If I didn’t push myself really hard that day or skip lunch I wouldn’t have left until 7. Anyway that’s what happens when a housekeeper calls off sick and it really sucks. I so badly wanted to call off today due to severe period cramps and due to the fact that I woke up feeling like I was hit with a cold but I’m going in anyway just so my coworkers don’t have to do a bunch of extra work. I hate it. What do you guys think? Is this a normal thing?
