I’m pissed! Employer booked me the absolute worst flights, with so many options that are so much CHEAPER.

Throwaway account. Incoming associate. Employer booked me super expensive flights with 2+ connections, long wait times, each way. Maybe they didn't do their research or prices drastically lowered, but I can book better flights for one-fourth the price, AND non-stop. Shocking. Do they hate me? IDK. But, this is not going to work for me. The tickets are non-refundable so airline won't refund the firm. I've also confirmed this detail with the firm itself. They will only be able to provide credit for my future use (in my name – not firm's name). TLDR: Is it ethical/illegal/ a bad look to “cancel” my current bad flights, pocket the credit, and book my own flights out of pocket? Any suggestions? I'm not sure if the firm will find out and don't want to create a bad impression, but 2+ stops each way when there are so many better alternatives is irritating.
