So I'm a nurse currently looking for a new job. To make a long story short, I'm looking for a job in an outpatient surgical center, for pre-op and PACU (post-anesthesia care unit or recovery room.) Basically this is an area that requires no holidays, no weekends, and no on-call hours. Surgeries are done during the day and then patients go home instead of being admitted into a hospital. Which is why I'm looking in this clinical area specifically.
So I apply to a position listed as same day surgery for one of my state's top hospital organizations. After a few days I get contacted to set up the initial basic HR interview. After that, we set up a zoom meeting where I have an interview with the unit manager. After that goes well, I'm invited for an in-person interview with the unit manager and charge nurse and told we will do a walk-through/shadow opportunity so I can see the flow of the unit. It has now been at least 3 weeks since my initial application for this job. Since things have been going so well and I keep getting following interviews, I stopped applying for other jobs.
It was at this third and final interview I found out this is not a same day/outpatient surgical center. It is in fact for the hospital's inpatient PACU, which does require me to work weekends, holidays, and overnight on call. Upon finding this out, I questioned the job posting and stated it was listed as same day surgery and was under the impression that there was no on call or holiday requirement.
The manager then brushed away my concerns and stated they are “the same thing,” which they are definitely not. She then asked me in a rude tone if it was going to be a problem for me. I then gathered up my things and said “yes, actually it is.” Trying not to burn bridges, I politely stated I was no longer interested in the position, thanked them for their time and walked out.
Before I was even home I had an email from the manager stating that I was extremely rude for leaving the interview without at least doing the one hour long tour and Shadow opportunity. She ended the email by stating she “was glad I showed my true colors before she hired someone like me.”
I did not respond to the email and instead forwarded it to the HR person that set up the interview in the first place. I stated that management like that was a reason that I would no longer seek employment with their organization. I'm probably blacklisted from the organization now which sucks because it's a 10 hospital system in my area, but oh well. Not worth it.
