I joined because I wanted the union at my school to do union stuff. Fight for lower tuition and raised graduation rates, better pay for teachers, more tutors, paying college athletes what they make in games, union stuff. All the president wants to do is talk about micro aggressions and feelings with other black students. And plan fun events. That’s…cool I guess? But unions actually change stuff, right?
Yet when I say an idea, the president is like “no, it won’t be on our agenda. That’s not our job. End of discussion. Your ideas are nice, but bsu will not include them.” Like…barely anyone comes to the meetings. There’s 4 people on the board. I’m like, can we at least vote on if my ideas should be acted on? She’s like, “no. This discussion is over.” It sucks because I’m so passionate about this group and have so many idea. How would you all handle this situation? We aren’t even the official board yet as we get sworn in today, so the others are still in power.
Update: I called for a meeting with the current e-board in power to resolve issues between me and the president. I said that I understood that this isn’t what the group usually does, but i at least wanted a vote amongst the community before my ideas were dismissed.
Basically, they said my job is to support the president and I’m the issue by calling for a meeting. They said I have a God complex, am prideful, need to grow up, and that I am the problem. They also said I’m doing this because I only want to be in a position of power, and don’t actually care about the group.
As you can imagine, I became upset. I explained how all I wanted was a proper vote, and that this shouldn’t be a dictatorship. I explained that I didn’t even WANT to be Vice President, I volunteered because no one else would. I explained how I’m a software engineer guy, so the club is useless for my resume; I’m doing this because I care. They said no votes are necessary and the president can do what they want and it’s my job to support.
They all said I’m in the wrong, and the current president said I am not a gift to the group and can be easily replaced. So, I said find another Vice President since I’m such an issue.
Then the board was like “NO NO NO WAIT” and the current president said she’ll “let me keep my position but I have to be on 60 days of probation.” Lol, what? I quit. Then she said I wasn’t fit for the position. Ok, cool. Find someone who is.
Someone else spoke up and said “we’re trying to Resolve this without you quitting!” Funny way of doing that. Current president said meeting is adjourned , and I left.
