I'm an accountant who a year ago moved from a non-union job to a union job. At first the union agreement seemed pretty good. I only pay about 100 a month in union dues but have gotten some good raises over the past few months retroactive to 2021.
I've started to look for a new job as I've been pretty bored at my job and I wasn't totally happy about some management changes. I applied on a whim to a job in the same organization (its a municipality and there is no connection to my current role). They are likely going to offer me a limited term position. There is likelihood that the role turns permanent but they can't guarantee it. But what I absolutely couldn't believe was that because I'm currently permanent the organization gives me reversion rights. I can choose to (or management can make me) return to my old position within 24 months. Basically I am guaranteed to either return to my old position or my new one will turn permanent.
Maybe I've been naive about union's but I'm honestly shocked how good we have it. I can now understand how difficult it is to get into this particular municipality. I had been trying since graduating but was having no luck until a year ago. I really was brainwashed how unions=bad. My old organization was non-union and hadn't seen raises even for cost of living in like 3 years and everyone there still dislikes unions.
