I have had some terrible interviews, but this one is easily one of the top, considering I had to take time off from my decently paying job to be at the interview for this developing-country-level civil servant salary position. So apparently I have submitted my resume to this public university in my country for the lecturer position over email like half a year ago, cant quite remember it, and they never got back to me until like last week. Told me they didnt have any openings in my major back then, but they do now, and sent me a simple interview request email asking me to prepare a demo class. My interview was initially scheduled for last week, but they told me it was cancelled and informed me of the new interview schedule yesterday – a day before the interview.
So a bit of background, I recently got an MBA from a decent university abroad, my country is a developing country so the minimum requirement to become a college lecturer is a Master’s, which I do have. What I dont have though, is teaching experience, but that was clear from my resume. I had to wait outside the interview room for a full hour before my turn was up. While outside and chatting with other candidates, who are all clearly much older and have a lot more teaching experience than I do, I noticed they are studying the school history by heart lol. Down to the English abbreviation of the school name, the total number of undergrad programs they are offering and shit. All I got was an interview request email so I only prepared the demo class materials lol.
As soon as I sat down in the interview, the interviewers told me they're still giving me a chance because of my education although my working experience is not quite there yet. I was like, oh alright, this is gonna be rough then lol. Then they started asking procedural questions (introduce yourself, why this job, why this school), before asking if I know which course I wanna teach. I was just like I want to be in this program, but I am not sure which course I want to teach because obviously those things are not fixed, right? Wrong lol. They started getting upset and this woman asked me a few more questions to prove that I didn't know anything about their school (in the 'so do you even have a teaching certificate yet? No, right?' spirit), before turning to the young HR guy asking “Who passed her? Where did you get her resume, over the Internet?”. Lol I was like damn scold me if you will but leave the poor guy alone please Then they let me do the first 2 slides of my demo class (but not before asking “did you even prepare a demo class? You probably didnt, right?”) before dismissing me. I mean, idk yall. I'm not mad about not getting the job. I'm mad about the audacity and rudeness from university professors I have just witnessed. The only reason I'm applying to these jobs is because I enjoy research, but idk if this is worth it.
