invasion of privacy in the workplace

i was asking my a friend of mine about internships, and she basically told me to run far, far, away from anything unpaid, and even that paid jobs can be a pain.

Am i surprised? NOPE

i already knew about the making students work more hours than they’re supposed to, toxic work environments, but she said something that i found strange.

my friend works a full time job, and she was originally keeping her instagram separate from coworkers and higher-ups, but these people literally took the time to search out for her instagram, which is set on private. she doesn’t even use her full name on instagram, with her first name being fairly common

My friend’s coworkers and higher-ups basically bugged her until she accepted their follow requests and followed them back.

i understand this situation doesn’t directly affect me, but it still irks me. is this specific invasion of privacy common in the workplace???
