Is it illegal to force shift managers are a fast food restaurant to use a group chat on their time off and does not get paid for it?

My friend who works at a fast food place is required to do group chat on their day off and does not get paid for it. They spend about a half hour a day. If they dont participate in the chat, they could get in trouble. They are hourly. This is in California. Please advise. Thank you.
