Is it illegal to get paid while not working?

Long story short my company has really screwed me over and it is a hostile environment. I’ll be starting at a new company soon and I have not given notice to my current company yet. I had an idea to just continue clocking in and “work remotely” for as long as I can at my current company until they fire. I would answer emails and do the very basic stuff while at my new job so I can keep collecting checks and keep my health insurance until I’m eligible at my new job. Is this is illegal? If I don’t need a reference is there any downside?
