Is it true that there’s “no point” in people from certain states voting?

I'm a Brit, so American politics obviously doesn't affect me as much as my own country's, but it still interests and concerns me for a lot of reasons. My (American) friends and I are all on pretty much the same page politically, but they get so defeatist when it comes to voting. As I understand it, some states are gerrymandered as fuck and there's the electoral collage, so they don't bother to vote if they live in a certain state or district. I don't want to Britsplain their own politics to them or anything, it's just weird to see them share the same antiwork sentiments (among other things) and then talk about how they won't bother voting. One of them said that their state doesn't have a ballot initiative, so they won't bother. I only have experience with voting in the UK, so I just sort of take their word…
