I (18F) work at a bicycle shop where the environment is very chill and laidback. We cuss around customers and make stupid videos for social media content just because it’s fun.
Normally, I wear long adidas black pants because, working with greasy shit, you don’t want it getting on your legs. However, I live in fucking Texas and sometimes, I need to wear shorts.
I show up to work wearing gym-type biker shorts. Basically they’re longer spandex but a thicker fabric. They cover everything and because they’re thicker, they barely outline my ass. My boss (40M) has his wife approach me and she tells me that to protect me from creeps, I can no longer wear those shorts. “I like to wear shorts too, but we have a lot of weirdos come in”. I’ve never actually had anyone stare at my ass before at work, and the shorts were borderline conservative. I don’t need her protection. This pissed me off. Also, why couldn’t he tell me this?
I talk to my brother about this and he said it’s fair because it’s a work environment, but literally no other aspect of the job represents professionalism. Then I brought up that he wears clothes resembling gym-wear to work and he shut me down again.
(Side note: I’m 5’10 and so shorts look even shorter on me because my legs are 75% of my body. It’s an unfortunate illusion I’ve dealt with since middle school.)
This is definitely not as bad as other posts in this sub, but I thought I’d vent. Thanks for reading.
