Is my former employer doing something illegal?

I recently left a job where I acrewed 49 hours of sick time that of course, wasn’t paid out to me. The way they set up sick time to acrew like PTO but label it “sick time” is shitty but legal. What gets me is how I NEVER got to use my sick time when I called out. I didn’t even know it existed! Every time I called out it went unpaid. My former boss is saying that I am “required” to ask for that time but I’m calling bullshit. If I am calling in sick, of course I want to use that time? I know that money is a lost cause at this point, but can I report them or something? I’m really so fed up with these employers doing everything possible to get around paying us what we rightfully earned.
