I joined corporate America a month and a half ago so I'm weary of being taken advantage of. My job title is “store manager" but it's the lowest position in the company. Store managers (SM) work alongside general managers (GM). SM does the basic everyday computer tasks with a heavy focus on cleaning. We're basically assistants. Our district got an email yesterday saying every employee needs to visit the location of a competitor to scope it out. Then we need to type an email reporting what we saw and compare our store. I'm not comfortable doing that. The email pointedly said that they aren't asking us to lie, since we could absolutely tell the truth, but it's uncomfortable either way. It also doesn't sound like part of my job description to me.
Is this task unusual to ask of someone in my position? How about a GM? Who's job is it to do that in a large national company?
Sorry if this doesn't fit the sub. This sub has been helpful for me to keep my head on straight. I even got a higher starting wage thanks to what I've learned from this sub! So I'm the spirit of not being taken advantage of, I find this sub appropriate.
