Is this even legal

I worked many years at a prominent Mustangs Plus parts retailer out of California that sold out to a LARGE Chevrolet sports car parts retailer out of Pennsylvania. They are/were moving inro the lucrative Mustang sector and needed experience and expertise. I was retained as remote sales. Boss and I never clicked then I received this in an email from Sales Director(boss) a few months before they terminated me. “Apparently, you and (fellow employee, name redacted) have been comparing notes on compensation which I find unbelievable, and frankly is against company policy, and subject to termination.”
