Is this fair at work?

I am probably gonna get demoted at my Software Engineer job because the team leader said I should be more independent and should not ask that many questions. Is this normal and fair? I just started this job and I am learning their software that they have been developing for years and years. Isn't it normal to ask? The team leader even helped me a few times without me even asking for help. I don't get it really.
