I applied to a line cook position where the Indeed job posting listed the range as being between $18-$22/hr. I was offered a position, and they told me I would start at $16/hr while I trained, and would be bumped up to $18/hr after my training.
During the interviewing process I was told I would be paid “based on my experience”. I have FIVE years of line cook experience at another restaurant. Granted this one is slightly more in depth, but that doesn’t discount my experience.
This same exact thing happened at another similar position I had applied for. Job posting started at $18. Was offered $16 while I trained. I keep getting spoken down to by these employers because I need to be trained. Doesn’t anyone coming into a new position need some level of training regardless of their experience?? They’d have to learn this restaurant’s menu, where everything is located, etc.
Who is coming in brand new already knowing this position inside and out that they’re paying $18/hr right off the bat? I’d love to know.
Is it normal to start a new position at a lower rate than the minimum posted on the job listing while training, and having to take their word that they’ll bump you to that minimum later??
