It feels like having “burnout” is just a capitalist euphemism for being overworked and exploited.

However, in this “burnout” discourse, blame is pointed at individual workers to solve problems they did not cause nor do they have the power to realistically change. More and more I see articles like this, Symptoms of Job Burnout and 7 Steps to Recovery. These articles always emphasize “resting” or “meditating” or “practicing self care” to cope with the impending stressors of an unhealthy, unstable working environment. There’s rarely, if ever, criticism about how the current labor system and those in power are responsible for creating employee burnout. It seems like the corporate wheel just keeps spinning to the detriment of its employee’s happiness, health, and well-being with little structural reform. The most you get is a mental health awareness week and a Headspace subscription.
