It’s the small things that pile up to a large thing

I'll try to keep this short. I work as a developer for a very niche piece of software in the UK, so job openings are far and in between. I've been working for this company for a while now and it's been mostly ok, but going downhill recently. With the whole “work from home” thing, I got to set up my home office and never been happier ( or as happy as I can be where work is concerned ). I have social anxiety, so not having to constantly interact with people in pointless small talk makes me feel so much better. Recently, higher ups have been pushing for a return to office – one that doesn't even make sense, as my team is actually split across multiple locations, so I'd basically be having virtual meetings and calls anyway.

Only a couple of people from my team work at this location, but their tasks are different from mine, so there's really no benefit. I've been fighting that decision tooth and nail, but we'll see how that goes.

Now, I've just learned that, after booking 2 weeks off for Christmas, because I never like to work that period anyway, I've been told that higher ups want a min of 5 people working. The reasoning for that is beyond me, as that's a time where there's not really much work – we're a financial company, so most work is done around April. What this boils down to, is that I'll have to work one day between x-mas and new year's. It's not a big hassle, but as the title says, it's the small things piling up. That day I have to work will be on my mind most of the holidays, and it will not feel like a proper rest period.

I want to quit this shit, but again, job openings for this software are scarce, so I'll just keep working here while I slowly lose my will to live.
