Job is mad I left work while I had customers …

Today at work I was assisting my close family friends (my god family). As I was helping them at my desk, my coworker PM’ed me saying my boyfriend called and that he had an emergency. I’m very close with my god family and asked them if I could call my boyfriend really quick. They said it was fine. I called him and his older (11 yrs), very large breed dog (80-90 lbs range) was sick and needed to urgently to go the vet. My bf only has a coupe so his dog wouldn’t fit in his car, but I have a wagon so he would fit in mine. I stepped away and asked my supervisor if I could leave so that I could drive them to the vet, she said it was fine. My god family only needed help with one more thing that would have taken about 5-10 min…

My god family only needed help with one more thing that would have taken about 5-10 min to complete. I asked my coworker if she could help them and she said she would. So I directed them to her desk and left. As I was leaving they hugged me and said they hoped our dog would be ok. They just lost their family dog of 15 years so they knew how it was.

As I was driving to pick up my bf and his dog, my supervisor texted me and said we needed to talk when I got back. I responded “Ok. I’m sorry if it’s about me leaving when I had customers, they are actually my family friends and they weren’t offended by me leaving” and she said “it actually is.” I was sort of confused by what that meant but whatever.

I came back to work an hour later and they not so kindly told me that it is completely unacceptable I left when I had customers, and that my supervisor didn’t know that I had customers when I left. They said customer service is our #1 job and that I am making the company look bad. They said it wasn’t a “life or death situation” and it could have waited. I tried to explain that:

  • I can guarantee you my god family wasn’t offended
  • they won’t think less of our company AT ALL
  • they have done business with our company for a good 20 years and won’t leave because of what happened

I couldn’t say any of that because they cut me off and said the circumstances didn’t matter. That I shouldn’t have put my supervisor in that position and this and that.

I’m just upset and anxious because I’m not one to get in trouble. In hindsight I really should have completed my task and then left, but I was so worried about our dog that I just wanted to leave immediately. He has been having health problems as of late.

Sorry for any typos I’m on mobile and just needed to vent
