Job wants me to resign instead of firing me

I was working at a retail store for around 5 months when I needed to take a leave as I was hospitalized. I kept up with updates on my illness and doctors notes, but eventually they stopped replying and I fell behind while recovering from surgery. Its been about 7 months since, and I had to move out of the area to stay with family. I had assumed due to them not replying to me I had been laid off. I recently reached out asking for a letter of termination, to which they responded asking for a letter of resignation. I told them I hadn't quit and that I assumed I had been laid off.
