So I've been thinking lately about how it makes me feel when “older” people, or “boomers” love to get mad at me for saying “Jobs are picky”.
Like going back a month ago, my mother in-law who is in her 40's, was talking to me about Jobs and how me and my husband are slacking and being lazy. And she hit me with, “Why don't you have a job?”
I told her that I've tried applying to jobs and stuff, I just get rejected. Then she hits me with, “You applied to McDonald's and turned it down, you could have had a job!” And I just stayed silent.
Now at this point I was going to bring up a day when we were at the drive through at McDonald's and the lady in the window was literally telling us how exhausted she was because she was the only one working in the back and there were like 20 cars waiting in a line. But I didn't bring it up because I thought she would argue with me about how I was making “excuses”.
So then she asks me have I been applying, so I somewhat lied and skipped over what she asked and said “Yes, but jobs aren't hiring, they are being picky”.
Literally a millisecond after I said that, she blew up at me, “Jobs are not picky, yall young people are just lazy and not trying to look in the right places, that's yall problem, yall don't want to work, when I was your age I had a job, I worked my ass off and I just don't understand that mindset of, jobs are picky. They are not picky yall just don't want to work!”
To add to this, I spoke to my dad about it a couple weeks ago. And this will surprise you because he is a boomer. My dad explained to me that he spoke to someone who is a manager and they told him that what interviewers or people that are hiring do is that they put up hiring signs for show. Hundreds of jobs could have up “We're Hiring” signs, but that does not mean they are always hiring. He explained that it's all a PR Stunt or a way to cover themselves for when the tax people or whatever come around. They still have to hire someone, but they can just hire 1 out of 5,000 people and throw the other 4,999 applications away. My dad even told me himself that is what he had to do when he used to interview people at a job once. They don't always hire people. And they can throw away just about all applications if they wanted.
So are jobs picky or are young people lazy?
Another thing is, I'm tired of people saying “Young people don't want to work”, ummm, it's not just young people quitting, it's older people too.
They just aways want to find a reason to blame people in their 20s for stuff.
First of all people are not going to work if they are not getting paid enough to do a 5 person job.
Another source that backs this, is my husband's last job was at Target. He worked in the tech department and guess what, he was the only one working in the tech department, the only one.
They also made him go to work at 4am to empty boxes out of the truck, and guess what again, he was the only one emptying the trucks, the only one opening the boxes, the only one putting stuff on shelves, while the managers and other people sat around yelling at him and telling him to hurry up before the store opened. He asked a manager he was cool with about why they wouldn't hire more people to work tech and they told him that the hire ups don't want to hire anyone else, they told him that it's sad but that's just how it is. And as you may have guessed, they didn't want to hire another person for day shift because they wanted to save money. Well, not long after my husband stopped going in to work, the stress started building up and no one cared, they just yelled at him if he made a mistake, put something somewhere by accident, or took too long emptying the truck and they barely trained him, all while getting paid a measly $15/hr.
So you see now, they complain about job shortages and people quitting, but they are hiring more people to help those that are working alone, they don't want to pay well and the work environments are unfair and biased. Picky to hire and too greedy to pay.
So if anyone else has a person walk up to you and go on about how people don't want to work and that people are lazy, throw what my dad said in their faces, throw what my husband went through in their faces. Tell them that even people 50+ agreed with what I told them. Get them to understand. Everyone of all age groups will leave a job if they are treated like a person. No one wants to be treated like a robot.
And sad to say, there are people that genuinely want to work but are afraid of the fact that they will still not be able to afford to live. Sad to say that corporations are greedy and don't care to pay better or treat people better.
Edit: Sorry if this is too long, I did try shortening it.
Short Version: People(mostly older) keep getting mad when I say jobs are picky. Jobs just don't want to hire people and they try not to hire people to keep money. And people complain about how people aren't working but people arent getting paid enough to work a 5 man job. It just doesn't make sense.
