Personal Anecdote:
My wife has a bachelors degree and is currently working on her masters degree. She works for JHU on a well funded research study and they pay her $16/hr. (Maryland has plans to make minimum wage $15/hr by 2025).
My wife is currently doing the job of 4 people and was hired at the very bottom of the pay range for her position. So she has asked for a raise. Her boss promptly responded with, “you are paid according to fair market value.” Well.. JHU is one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland so the positions they use for pay comparisons are..their own.
Additionally, JHU does not provide a 401k. They provide a 403b and do not provide any employer contributions unless you are 35 or older. JHU also informed my wife that they WILL NOT provide any tuition assistance. (Even though for her to get a pay raise there she is required to have a Masters or PhD)
(Side bar anecdote: I got my Masters from JHU and right before I graduated it cost $5,600 a class. Yay student loans)
Final Thoughts:
John’s Hopkins is a multi-billion dollar “non-profit” that provides basically no employee benefits, pays barely above Maryland’s projected minimum wage, and uses their own internal jobs for pay comparison for pay raises. Of course they also charge exorbitant prices for tuition and medical care.
