long post so tldr: boss changes random rule ive followed for 1 and a half years without telling me. proceeds to call me an idiot and yells at an employee who worked there longer than him. proceeds to say i stand around for 10 minutes because i always finish closing tasks early, which is a blatant delusion because i always finish closing perfectly on time and have never had a problem with it. hes even complemented me on how well i am with time management.
so ive been working at a farmers market for a year and a half just part time, every day we have a strict schedule of when i need to start cleaning up before closing. it has been very slow lately so for a couple months i have been starting cleaning 5 minutes late and my boss has been fine with it because ive never once been off time for closing, hes even complemented me on it many times. well about 2 weeks ago we changed the hours so we close 15 minutes earlier than we used to, so obviously since we used to start cleaning at 4:45 i started cleaning at 4:30 after the time change. for 2 weeks this was not a problem until today… today he got mad at me for starting to clean at 4:30 (when i always do) saying that its way to early to start cleaning, so he tells me to clean up at 4:45. in my head im like wtf how am i going to get everything done if i start closing 15 minutes late. i protest a bit but listened to what he said. an employee who has worked there for 20 years and before the current owner has even owned the place starts getting worried saying i need to clean right now or we will be late. so im extremely confused and think the boss is just messing up time in his head. i tell my boss that the employee (his most trusted and trained employee) is telling me to clean right now, so what does he do? he fucking goes and yells at that employee. i start cleaning anyway because now im WAY off time. once i finish the first half of cleaning and im getting ready to start sweeping he gets mad at me for fucking being off time because now i have 5 minutes to sweep the entire back of the store and the floor where the customers walk, this usually takes me 15 mins and has never been a problem. i just skip the sweeping and go straight to mopping because we mop 10 mins before we close and now it was 10 mins before we close. i go uo to my boss and ask “wait so when am i supposed to start cleaning im so confused” then he said i should start at 4:45 which is the old time i used to start before the time change. he tells me i shouldve known this then i said “well i assumed since we always started cleaning at 4:45 when we closed at 5:30 i should start at 4:30 since we close at 5:15 now” he then gets all passive aggressive and says “you shouldve asked, not assumed” then proceeds to call me an idiot and all this out of nowhere shit. he then says ive always finish cleaning early then stand around for 10 mins waiting to punch out, which is a blatant delusion because i NEVER finish early, the most ive ever finished early was like 2 minutes. so i stand around for 2 minutes waiting to punch out SOMETIMES this rarely ever happens, big fucking deal its 2 mins. and he knows i dont finish early, he always tells me i do a good job finishing on time so wtf is going on? so i sometimes finish 2 mins early, that doesnt mean i should start 15 minutes late. whats the next move boys?
also the employee he yelled at is such a sweetheart, she can barely speak english and 90 percent of the time i have no idea what she is saying lol. but when it was just us in a room after he went all crazy she starts looking at me and has a laugh attack saying “dont worry dont worry”
