Just another quitting story

A family member works at a retail store and just put in two weeks notice. It's not a horrible place, but they just don't jive with the current crop of coworkers. When they first got hired on it was nice, people were nice and pleasant and professional. People cared about doing a good job and having the store look nice and treating customers right. They coordinated breaks well, they communicated they covered for one another when needed. That's all changed. The new manager brought in less than a year ago just doesn't care. That has rubbed off on all the employees, most of whom are newer. They talk smack to and about one another.

They don't coordinate breaks and then everyone wants to take breaks at the same time and get pissy with one another. They pull out boxes and bins from the back room and leave them in the aisle.

The manager isn't there too often, is on the schedule but doesn't show up. It takes two people to open up and sometimes the other one will be in the parking lot just waiting while the manager spouts off some excuse why they'll be late. When the regional manager schedules a visit the manager usually pulls an all nighter to get the store in nice order, then meets with the regional manager and all that. When the visit is over, the manager takes off.

The manager is salary, works maybe 30 or so hours a week if that, while the company norm for a manager is 50. The assistant manager is also salary works about 40 to 50 hours per week. The other employees are hourly, a few full time but mostly part time. Many of them complain and say they want more hours and then when they are assigned more hours they don't show up, they call in, they come late, they make excuses.

The going attitude is “they haven't fired me yet, so I'm doing fine” and that's from the manager on down. “My performance approval comes every payday, and so far so good” is another saying that they toss around.

So, this family member, they're done. They have determined that they cannot thrive in an environment where the manager does not follow the company expectations and then of course doesn't hold anyone accountable for anything.

That is all, have a great day.
