I was employed as a fabricator at a company that makes electric vehicles in California. (No, not that one) The place I live is pretty expensive and I had been talking to my coworkers about how it’s so hard to make ends meet. Turns out most of us were going to the food bank just to survive but didn’t tell anyone else about it. Once I opened up about my own situation everyone else identified and they were all pissed. We are all skilled workers. Welders, fabricators, electronic techs, mechanics, etc… We got together and decided to stage a walkout next Monday morning and management must’ve heard about it because they canned me fast.
My point is that they are scared. They are FUCKING PETRIFIED of you doing something progressive and getting together. I’m a casualty in a war that can still be won. Don’t give up. Don’t settle for mere survival. And now that I think about it, I’m not a casualty. I’m going to go somewhere else and work. And when I get there I’ll push for fair pay too. I hope you all do the same. I’m going to get seriously drunk now and process this and then I’ll start sending out my (pretty impressive) résumé to other outfits. I will survive. And if I don’t prosper, maybe our children will. But only if we fight.
