Kinda have to ask boss to run payroll?

Posting from a burner account because somewhat nervous this would somehow find its way back to me. I work at a small business and I can mostly tolerate what I do and on some level, even enjoy it (side note: I have withstood the most ridiculous circumstances to keep doing it, but thats another post). Recently I was promoted to a managerial position, which has been going ok. We hired a bunch of new staff and things have been running mostly smooth except… every other week I basically have to beg the owner/my boss to run payroll. Two weeks after we hired new employees, boss was out of town, I offered to run payroll (even tho its way past my paygrade) because I wanted to ensure that everyone got their first paycheck on time. I work at a small business and I can mostly tolerate what I do and on some level, even enjoy it (side note: I have withstood the most ridiculous circumstances to keep doing it, but thats another post). Recently I was promoted to a managerial position, which has been going ok. Two weeks after we hired new employees, boss was out of town, I offered to run payroll (even tho its way past my paygrade) because I wanted to ensure that everyone got their first paycheck on time. Boss said he could run it from his phone, I reluctantly said ok. He came back from vacation and I saw payroll had not been run. Turns out he couldn’t actually run it from his phone, even tho I questioned repeatedly, asking him if he could. I did my part and I had added up everyones hours and emailed it to him. (We are very old-fashioned and write our hours). Got processed 3 days late.

Payroll this week, same situation, we have two new employees and its time to run payroll. I remind him, ask that he not forget cuz I also need to get paid. He jokingly says ‘put your expenses on a credit card’ to which i say thats exactly the bill I need to pay. I have a pretty good relationship with my boss, but often times I pick up responsibilities that are past my paygrade. Practically begging him to run payroll, saying we need to set a good precedent for the new employees that theyll get paid on-time (trying to hold him responsible). He jokingly says the bar needs to be set low. This is a man I often feel is a friend of mine but how do I tell him even with the wage I get, I practically still live paycheck to paycheck and getting paid on time is essential? I get a decent wage but it is definitely what I should be being paid for the extra amount of labor I have to do. My title is shipping manager, but I also run social media, act as a HR, IT, update the website, you name it. Ensuring employees get paid is not in my job description. Don’t hate my job, boss is kinda cool most of the time, but this is really fucking annoying. Wwyd?
