The local coffee shop I worked at recently went out of business after all of the staff quit due to frustration with the owners. Turns out they were already planning to sell and just never told anyone, keeping the place running with as few people as possible until the last person refused to show up.
The last checks for my pay were mailed to me. Paper checks had become the norm in the last months of this place, they even fired someone who was trying to demand they give her actual paystubs. Among many other staff complaints about the negligence of the owners, there was a suspicion that the owners were skimming our tips.
The last two checks I deposited from them were returned by the bank and I was charged an 8 dollar fee for each. Feels absurd that I'd get penalized for someone else's bad check, but that's 'Merica for you.
The owners haven't responded to my texts inquiring about this. I was even very polite, all things considered. I'll be visiting their home to ask in person if they continue to ghost me.
