The loyalty most crappy jobs expect is maddening. One of the weird things about this is the better the job, the more respect you get when leaving. Had my last day today at a great company and I received so much good will. People are sad I'm leaving but excited for my new opportunity.
Leaving hurts them, because I'm good at my job. I'm also a bit of a chameleon, so I impact a lot of different areas. Yet, no one really cared about that. They all wanted to wish me well (This included senior execs, founders, managers and co-workers). So many reached out to me.
One VP told me, “When you compare opportunities, you look at everything, then you have to do what's best for you.” That is basically the attitude everyone had. It's the way it should be.
BTW, my final act as a manager there was to approve two-weeks vacation for an employee.
