So here is the thing. Quiet-quitting isn't quitting. It's actually thought that the word/s came from Jamie Dimon, the billionaire in charge of JPMorgan in an attack against remote workers coming back to the office and not “hussle” like they use to. (working 80+ hours for a hope of a promotion vs working 40 hours)
He has basically gone at an all out war against remote work for some reason and he used many negative names for people who want to work fully remote.
Anyways, as I mention quiet quitting isn't quitting.
It's doing what you are paid for, and nothing more. It's basically having a proper work life balance.
So basically, if you get off at 5PM. Then you don't answer company emails, calls, text, etc. If your boss ask you to stay late to work. Then the answer is no (10x if you are salary and don't get a pay difference for staying later). If your boss wants you and your coworkers to go out drinking. The answer is no, unless you want to. You don't stick your hand up for extra projects or work.
Basically you show up for work, do your job, and go home.
If it sounds like this is nothing new. Well… it isn't. Many people prior years call it having a proper work life balance. But again, we have billionaires pissed at people wanting remote work for this, and those coming back to the office don't want to work for free in hopes for a promotion or a chance they MIGHT keep their job during the next round of layoffs. Or to not get shamed for basically working to live.
Like it isn't even if you hate your job or whatever. Again, it is just having proper balance between work and general life. Like you aren't living to work, and sure as hell you shouldn't be working for free. And to be forced to work for free is slavery.
Literally one of the definitions of slave is = A person who is forced against his/her will to perform, for another person or other persons, services on a regular or continuing basis.
And while people pull the “well they can quit”. Slaves back in the day could also off themselves, so by that logic they must not been slaves.
Anyways, one of the interesting things with this movement is what is shown is the mentality of going above and beyond without extra pay. This is directly linked to most jobs went from 8 people doing it to 1 even without automation. And it helped make it where you have to be super over qualified to do a given job that years back a HS kid could do just fine.

TLDR, when you hear quiet quitting. Note it isn't people doing below what they are paid to do. It is people doing exactly what they are paid to do and nothing more.
It is only called quiet quitting to insult and shame people. Similar to how the media calls failure to launch to those who can't afford a house or rent, those disabled, or those saving money while living with family.
Example:
- You go to 7-Eleven gas station and have a drink in hand.
- Person there says “that will be $3”
- You say “I will pay for that, but I want a pack of cigs and my gas for free”
- Person says “you have to pay for those”
- You say “7-Eleven is quite quitting”
