I'm a graduate student and will finish my program in June. It will take a few months for my license to be approved to utilize my degree (within the healthcare field), and I'm due with my second child in September.
I have been applying to part time jobs as a way to bridge the gap between student loan money running out and my actual career starting. My husband's pay covers most of our bills, but I need to pay for daycare and hopefully start paying off my student loans.
I have applied to dozens of jobs and only heard back from a few (because, you know, us younger generation folks don't want to work /s). First, I was denied a job that I previously had a verbal agreement would be mine because of my pregnancy (“I don't want to hire you anymore because I think your pregnancy appointments and potential pregnancy complications would be more stress for me [the employer].”). Second, I interviewed for a hostess position listed at $13 and was told they actually start at $10. Now, I just got off a video interview for a cashier that was listed at $14-$15.25 and was told part time actually starts at $9, despite the ad clearly saying it included part time.
All I want is to pay for daycare and start paying off the student loan debt that is currently higher than our mortgage, even if the job isn't all that fun or fulfilling. But I can't find a potential employer that respects us enough to accurately list the starting pay in their job posting.
