Hello everyone, this event occurred today and I would like your honest and brutal answers.
Background: I work for a corporation that recently acquired several fintech related companies in the past 5 years. I have been in my role for over 1 year, which is required tenured for internal mobility eligibility per company policy. The company in question is not affiliated nor a subsidiary, it is the same parent company and internal job site is the same for all employees.
Incident: My apologies for the long story. I have worked closely with our internal mobility team earlier this year and continued to do so within our goal work for growth and career advancement. Last week, a opportunity presented itself in the hiring site for one of the companies’ subsidiaries for an entry level analyst position. I have constantly reinforced my goals to be aligned for promotion/internal mobility. So I have applied at the chance last Friday and been contacted this Monday, which I was shocked at how fast they had reached out.
Per company policy, my manager needs to approve any recruiting interview, in which I had the phone screen and passed with ease and the recruiter wanted to move me to the hiring process. Prior to the phone screen, I had informed my manager on a zoom that I had applied and gotten a phone screening. At first, he seemed okay with it and he has been aware that I am actively seeking growth opportunities.
Yesterday on my 1:1 with him, he informed me that he will not move forward with my mobility interview process with other hiring manager as I am “not ready to leave the nest”. I have met and continued to meet my expectations and recently gotten a positive commendation from him for a good job. He then asked me for the hiring manager’s name and information to see on our internal employee site. He downplayed that I need more skills in my current position and will revisit future opportunities after another year or two. He has denied my request and likely addressed it to the hiring manager via slack or email.
Question: Is this a fair assessment from my manager? I feel frustrated that I couldn’t even have an interview opportunity. Should I bring this up to my HR department? Company policy illustrates that I will need manager approval for any mobility moves.
My current role does not pay more than 55K in total and the other role is 60K, very similar responsibilities with no supervisory capacity.
