manager making us pay for missing stock

hey. can anyone help me figure out the legality of this? i recently started a job at a convenience store with my girlfriend. coming out of fast food, it looked low stress for me. its her first job. problem is this place is terribly run. we were barely trained, we had two days where we were briefly shown everything and then we started working alone. as in, only one person works a shift at a time. we had to figure out a Lot of things by ourselves. this job requires a ton of data tracking and counting cigarettes and lottery tickets etc. we have to count thousands of them, twice per shift, start and end. apparently, due to some mistakes in our data and general mistakes ringing in lottery tickets, we are short on what we should have, and now our manager is taking hundreds out of our paychecks to…

i feel like this especially isnt fair to my girlfriend, this is her first job and she wasnt trained very well. she worked super hard to make up for the negligence this store has been through, shes cleaned the whole building (it was like a biohazard before) and even came in and did unpaid work during my shifts.

also, we had to sign a document when we started working saying that we would cover anything missing. i thought this was a red flag but i didnt really have a choice.

tldr; started a new job, we were barely trained. manager is now taking hundreds from of our paychecks to make up for mistakes in data and ringing lotto in. we make minimum wage.
