This is going to be a long post… I’m sorry in advance.
I work in healthcare and my manager has always been pretty decent up until recently.
About 8 months ago she went from being on top of things and helping out as much as she possibly can to being absent and not caring about her job anymore. At the time we noticed she would disappear for an hour or more. Her excuses never made sense. One senior staff under her questioned her on it and it just made her angry. Eventually that staff member resigned because they couldn’t stand working for her considering she was always missing and she ended up playing manager for less money. Around that time rumors started flying that my manager was sleeping with another staff member who wasn’t in our department but who worked in the building. It also turned out this staff member was married and had a baby on the way. Eventually she found out the rumor was going around and during a staff meeting her boss reamed the whole department out and told us to stop talking about it, that we had no idea the truth, and how we could ruin lives. Fair enough… I never discussed it because I personally had no interest in the gossip. Another staff member leaves for another department, also in the building and her reason was also my MIA manager. We haven’t filled either position yet. It’s put a ton of stress on everyone… so time goes by and things are still a mess, my boss is still MIA half the time, and her boss doesn’t seem to care. The rumors are back about her and this other guy who works in the building this time with pictures of her in the parking lot with him. That pisses her off more.
So because we are so short staffed some work has fallen behind, but most specifically her tasks. Tasks that she won’t accept help on. So upper management comes in and takes over her duties and she just makes excuses of how she’s been very busy, how the work is done just not documented, etc. But upper management realizes I’m the one trying to keep up with my work and also play manager now. They can’t so anything until we are fully staffed though so they can see if anything improves with her.
The worst part of this is she knows we are struggling and decided to take a week vacation (she was home the entire time) and left 2 of us to run the office that is supposed to have 6 staff.
I love her as a person, but her as a coworker is really starting to get to me.
What would you do?
