I worked at McDonald's throughout high school. I was promoted to crew trainer, which came with a raise of 25¢ CAD. Over the next year I trained literally every new staff member in every section of the store. Our restaurant was then given the award for the #1 McDonald's in Ontario. Their 25¢ raise went pretty far.
The thing is, they intentionally timed the promotion period to immediately before minimum wage increased by about 40¢. They sat me down to explain the responsibilities of my new position and the new pay. With a big smile, they explained that I would normally get a 25¢ raise but I would be receiving a 40¢ raise instead, a “raise” to the new minimum wage. When I complained, saying that my raise should be applied after the minimum wage increase the owner and present manager got upset and reiterated I was getting a larger “raise” than I should receive, and said I was being greedy. I should have quit on the spot, but instead allowed myself to be used and wasted 4 years of my life working for awful people.
I eventually walked out of the job when they had me closing the store every weeknight. They would send home other staff early so they didn't have to pay them. They would just have me close their departments. It got to the point I was closing every department in the store myself most nights while still making minimum wage. I was scheduled until 2am but the manager counting the tills was consistently so slow, I never left before 3:30. I was forced to walk her to her car “so she wouldn't be assaulted”. I would often clock out and wait over an hour for her to finish. She would then drive off leaving a teenager alone in a dark parking lot. I asked several times to be taken off nights, but they refused to give up the wages they saved by having me close the entire store. They strung me along by promising I would be manager of the walmart location that ended up being delayed for years. I never did get a single raise.
