Quick story that happened about 10 years ago, but it still feels weirdly memorable.
Three of us were on our unpaid lunch break when the manager appeared with a box of individually wrapped desserts from a local bakery.
Manager: “Ladies, would anyone like a dessert?”
We were all shocked at the generosity; this guy would search every employee's order to ensure we weren't stealing extra food/sauces, we couldn't believe he'd bought us treats!
(He hadn't.)
Manager, after letting us each select one: “…they're $3 each. If you don't have it today, I can write your name down.”
The oldest woman (~40yo) actually laughed at him and tossed hers back into the box, shaking her head. Other girl and I were both ~19yo so we were more timid, but quietly returned ours as well. Manager's face went red.
Manager: “You thought it was free? Why would you think it was free??”
He walked away in a huff. I ended up buying one a few days later; I was young and he was so exasperated, I thought maybe we had been the entitled ones.
