McDonald’s manager selling treats to workers.

Quick story that happened about 10 years ago, but it still feels weirdly memorable. Three of us were on our unpaid lunch break when the manager appeared with a box of individually wrapped desserts from a local bakery. Manager: “Ladies, would anyone like a dessert?” We were all shocked at the generosity; this guy would search every employee's order to ensure we weren't stealing extra food/sauces, we couldn't believe he'd bought us treats! (He hadn't.) Manager, after letting us each select one: “…they're $3 each. If you don't have it today, I can write your name down.” The oldest woman (~40yo) actually laughed at him and tossed hers back into the box, shaking her head. Other girl and I were both ~19yo so we were more timid, but quietly returned ours as well. Manager's face went red. Manager: “You thought it was free? Why would you think it was free??”…

He walked away in a huff. I ended up buying one a few days later; I was young and he was so exasperated, I thought maybe we had been the entitled ones.
