Menards in Camby, IN – $18/hr, the ad said, but only kind of…and it gets worse

UPDATE: My son found a better job. It's actually the restaurant where he worked as a teen, hiring him back as a shift manager for enough money and hours to serve his purposes (he just needs a good part-time thing nearby – to save on gas – to pay a few bills while he starts a business from home). He's going to be making SIX dollars an hour more than when he quit two years ago. He knows the job, he knows everybody there including the owners, this will work out. He's starting this week.

My son called about this position, after applying online. Here's what I heard the HR person tell him over the phone:

A. Well, it's not really $18/hr, it's $17/hr. They might go as high as $18 for a certified forklift driver with experience.

B. It's part-time but they can't guarantee any number of hours per week. Not 5, not 10, not 20.

C. But you must have more than full-time availability — ALL shifts, 7 days per week.

I'm over here trying to contain my rage. They're not the only ones, this is how it is out there right now. But I can't seem to adjust to injustice so I'm mad.

In response to A: Lying about the pay sucks and shouldn't be legal for a job posting.

In response to A, part 2: If someone has taken the time and trouble to get certified at forklift and gain experience at driving, that person has ENDLESS warehouse options in this part of Indiana. They're all hiring forklift, all the time, $23 to $25/hr at least, full-time with benefits, and pick your shift. WHY would this person work a nothing-maybe job at Menards for low pay, no guaranteed hours, and no ability to supplement with 2 or 3 more crappy retail jobs?

In response to B: If you don't even know when you'd need someone, don't try to hire someone.

In response to C: See response to A, part 2. NOBODY can live like this. Where do you think your on-call wage slaves will live? How will they eat? Can they live in their car (if they can afford one) in Menards parking lot? Can they help themselves to the grocery section of your store? No?
