Missing a Funeral

The fact that I have to miss the funeral of a close family friend this week is really irritating me more than it probably should. I work in the back office of a bank and my job won’t allow me to use sick time because I’m not sick, no vacation time because it’s not a vacation, and I can’t get bereavement because it’s not immediate family (which seems pretty standard everywhere so I can understand that part). The only option I was given was to come in, leave for the funeral, then come back in to work afterward and I’d have to make up whatever time I lost by coming in early and taking shorter lunches the rest of the week, however the funeral is Thursday and I can’t make all that up on Friday alone because it’s the last day of the pay period. Not only that, the funeral s about an hours drive from my work. What’s even worse is our pay is such crap that I can’t afford to just lose out on time either. Otherwise I’d just go. I should also mention there is no such thing as PTO or personal days for us. It’s either sick or vacation. That’s it.

For the most part I like my job but I become more bitter about it each day for more reasons than this one.
