Motivated by money? Not for me.

I never apply for sales. Because I don’t like sales. I am not motivated by money. Despite that, whenever I get interviewed for a potential job, the employer is always trying to sell me the job by luring me with how to make even more money, and then more money on top of that more money. To the point I can’t even tell what the the job description even was anymore. Just starts to sound like a game show “choose the right door and you’ll win a brand new car!” They talk more about the commision than the actual job duties themselves. I just want a clear description of what I will be doing, since I did not apply for sales afterall. When I finally get a chance to tell them I am not motivated by money, and remind them I applied for the service position not sales, they look…

I am motivated by security. Pay me a fair wage, make it VERY clear what you expect of me so neither of us are disappointed later. I am organized, empathetic, professional, punctual, and thorough. How about I do what is expected, you pay me, and don’t threaten to let me go 3 months down the road because you were expecting a “go-getter.” I am not a “go getter.” I am here to do a specific job, and I will do it to my utmost best. But don’t ask me to sell when you didn’t hire me for sales. Don’t act surprised that I haven’t pushed our clients beyond the specific reason they called and just need my assistance. I was very transparent from the beginning I am not a salesperson. You want service? You got it! You want someone who’s eyes get wide at the thought of even more money in their pockets, even if it means giving up their weekends from time to time? You should have hired someone else.

Why is it such a weird concept for someone to just be happy with a livable wage that allows them a comfortable, and enjoyable lifestyle without all the extra? I have enough money to pay the bills, buy fun things once and awhile, go on vacations here and there, and save some back. That’s more than enough for me. Why is this so difficult that all I ask is for job security? You hired me for a specific role, I do it with flying colors. But now you realize I wasn’t kidding when I said extra money means nothing to me. I don’t like pushing sales on people. I like helping them. I am always VERY clear about this! Why do people have to be motivated by getting more, more, more to have job security? Why does everyone have to have a type A personality? What is wrong with having a job and doing it well, having good worth ethic, wanting to help, and building genuine relationships with clients without pushing them to give your company even more money? Leave that to the sales people. That’s what they’re good at. That’s what they’re hired to do. Besides, what good does selling to all these people do if you don’t have at least one service person who genuinely cares? Who just wants to help these clients? People stay with companies/agencies they trust and build relationships with. If all every single person they talk to does is push them to spend more…it’s just going to annoy them and they may even eventually get resentful. At least, that’s how I look at it.
