Musk represents the reactionary, fascistic element of the ruling class as opposed to the traditional, authoritarian faction of the ruling class. — Musk through Trostkyist Theory

Trotsky made a distinction between the big bourgeoisie who backed the traditional conservative parties of Weimar and the petty bourgeois who backed the fascists. The traditional ruling class found the Nazis distasteful but, when push came to shove, gave the Nazis their support as a bulwark against socialism. Trotsky writes, in “What is National Socialism?”: “The bonfires which burn the impious literature of Marxism light up brilliantly the class nature of National Socialism. While the Nazis acted as a party and not as a state power, they did not quite find an approach to the working class. Trotsky writes, in “What is National Socialism?”:

“The bonfires which burn the impious literature of Marxism light up brilliantly the class nature of National Socialism. While the Nazis acted as a party and not as a state power, they did not quite find an approach to the working class. On the other side, the big bourgeoisie, even those who supported Hitler with money, did not consider his party theirs. The national “renaissance” leaned wholly upon the middle classes, the most backward part of the nation, the heavy ballast of history. Political art consisted in fusing the petty bourgeoisie into oneness through its common hostility to the proletariat What must be done in order to improve things? First of all, throttle those who are underneath. Impotent before big capital, the petty bourgeoisie hopes in the future to regain its social dignity through the ruin of the workers.”

Elon Musk, now, is firmly aligning himself with the proto-fascist forces that Trump unleashed in the U.S. This is a big step toward the ruling class jettisoning their support for traditional Republican conservatism and embracing fascism as a bulwark against socialism. Yes, the midterm elections might have stalled this process, but may well not have aborted it.

Socialism is the answer to our society's ills. As the saying goes, we must choose between a future of socialism or barbarism.

As the World Socialist Web Site writes of Musk and his demand that employees pledge to be “hardcore”:

“In a rational society, this service [Twitter] that is utilized by hundreds of millions of human beings for news and information would be publicly owned, but under capitalism it has become the plaything of a single billionaire oligarch, and a fascistic buffoon to boot.”
