Must work an average of 30 hours per week to get insurance, but employer doesn’t guarantee hours?

I just started a new job and I'm wondering how this works. If you get sick and can't work for a week or two, then you lose your insurance (just when you need it the most)? How is this legal? I was told that while the company doesn't guarantee hours, as long as you have open availability you will probably get scheduled enough hours to get insurance. However, “probably” having insurance doesn't make me feel very secure. This company has a good reputation of paying employees fairly and treating them well, so I was surprised to hear about this insurance situation. I like the job aside from this one factor. Are there any kind of protections for employees regarding getting sick/injured and not being able to work enough hours to qualify for insurance?
