My boss fired me. But told me I had to keep working until the end of the week. How does this even work?

I am a noob with employment law. I was 10 minutes late to work today and that appeared to be the final straw for my employer who told me “consider yourself fired. I don't want you here anymore. But I'm requiring you to stay through until the end of the week.”. What is the logic of this? I've been fired before but it's always been a “get the hell out now” or a layoff where they just say what you last date will be. Part of me really wants to walk out right now, but I know I need the money so staying until the end of the week is beneficial. But it just feels so dumb.
