I have worked at my job (Chipotle) for 3 years now. I’m a back of the house trainer and mainly do grill everyday for 6 days in a row. I’ve been asking my boss to have new people hired to help me share the responsibility of grill because grill is the hardest position and I’m doing it more than anyone here. There are 5 other employees that are all trained for grill but still only do the easier prep shifts. I’m trained on all stations but still get stuck on grill constantly. Right now I make $17 an hour which is the average pay at my job and with all the hours I work on grill I’m starting to think it’s not worth it. People come in and get $17 burritos and it depresses me every time since one burrito is equivalent to one hour of my hard work. I asked my boss if they could find another employee to share the grill shifts with me or at least switch up my days so I’m not working 6 days in a row. My boss said that I complain too much and that it’s not fair for me to put this work onto someone who makes less than me. I was confused because I thought everyone makes the same amount as I did. She said that 3 months ago she gave me a 20 cent raise and that I should be thanking her for it. That’s why she has me on the hardest position because I make 20 cents more than the other employees. I didn’t thank her, I asked her why I was never aware of this raise and she told me that I should be checking my pay stubs and it’s not her job to announce when I get a raise or am promoted. I just left feeling weird that her solution for me asking for a break from one position was to give me a 20 cent raise and never tell me.
One week later I asked my coworker how much she makes and she told me $17.90 an hour. This is a new employee that isn’t trained on grill or a trainer. I don’t know that to do about this but my gut is telling me quit.
TLDR; my boss gave me a 20 cent raise instead of relieving the level of work I asked to be reduced.
