I am an entry level manager for a corporation. The general manager has always been pleasant towards me, but recently (last couple months), he’s been really on everyone’s ass and I believe it’s because other managers aren’t fulfilling their duties completely. He also believes department heads (himself and my direct boss, for example) shouldn’t work more than 4 days and the departments should mostly be managed by their assistants with them overlooking. Although I don’t fully agree with this, my direct supervisor is a great boss and has earned her place at our company and I fully believe she should enjoy her life. However, I can fully complete my job and ALL my work tasks in a 5 day work week and I REFUSE to work 6 days a week just “because”. My GM confronted me since I write our department’s schedule and said I need to be here more because I’m salary and that he wants to see my scheduled 6 days a week. I laughed at first thinking he was joking, but his stern look told me differently. “Wait, you’re serious?” “Yes I’m completely serious. I want you here 6 days a week moving forward.” I tried to express my opinion that this was completely unnecessary and that I don’t even need to be here 5 days a week sometimes, let alone 6, but he wasn’t having it. He told me his decision was firm and that I was to schedule myself 6. At this point I felt personally attacked and was pissed so I happily said, “Mark you can have me 5 days a week or you can have me 0, but I have a life and a family and I will not work 6 days a week just “because”.” He said “we’ll see about that” before storming off. I fully intend on quitting the day he decides to die on this hill, if he does. I work my ass off for this company and WILL NOT work unnecessary hours for unsolicited reasons. Fuck work.
