(Sorry for bad English, it's not my mother tongue)
My boyfriend works as a craftsman in costumer service, means, he repairs stuff in houses.
He officially learnt electrician, but also provides services in the fields of heating, air-conditioning and sanitary because his boss told him to do. He never officially got a licence for it, although he could get it now because of his experience. But his boss doesn't give the time to officially get it, because it means, that he cannot work at this time and he needs to pay him better.
Furthermore, the company provides emergency service 24/7 and because my bf is the only one besides the boss who works in customer service, he needs to stay ready every second week. Which, normally, is not that big deal, but when it comes to holidays, he only has one week without working at all, because of it. This includes christmas, new year and summer holidays. If he takes two weeks holidays, he gets two weeks, but needs to provide emergency service anyway. So, two weeks holiday in another country? Not possible. Legal? I don't know.
Even more ridiculous are his working times. Normally, he works 40hrs a week, but when it comes to problems and he needs more time to fix something, he also has to do ALL the other customers of that day. It often happens, that he comes home after 6 pm, eventho, he finished his 8 hrs at 4 pm.
Last, but not least, EVERY ONE calls him to fix some stuff for them FOR FREE in his freetime, because “he can. C'mon, I'm family/good friend”.
I often told him, that's not healthy at all, but really can understand why he doesn't leave. “Who cares for the customers, when I'm not working there anymore? Our company doesn't get new employees, because nobody wants to work as a craftman anymore.”
Well, to my mind, they really need to fix very much. I wanted to work as a electrician in customer service as well, but NOW I'm like: “You know what? When I study engineering I easily can work part time for the same money in the industry. Why would I choose THIS way?” and I bet, many more think that way. Craftmanship dies (in my country) because of this situation and no boss wants to change anything.
I don't mind if he wants to stay there, I support him as well as I can, but I secretly hope, he changes his workplace one day.
