Hi all. I work at a public library in the US. I was talking to a coworker about staying after close on occasion, since sometimes we aren't completely done at the time of close (normally it's a max of 5 min over). He mentioned that one time before I started they had to stay over 20 minutes because of a patron and that it sucked we didn't get paid. I was very confused on this because I've never worked anywhere that doesn't pay you for being clocked in after close.
So, apparently, the timeclock stops the second it's the time for us to be closed. (We use a computer application for this. The computers do not turn off the second we close, we manually turn them off). Surely it seems wrong that if we are actively working, we should be paid? I've checked the handbooks and haven't seen anything about this and it's not something I'm comfortable bringing up to my manager.
I checked with some other coworkers and they all said the same thing and basically said “oh well”. Most people have worked here between 1-15+ years and are all part time (so no benefits) and can't get more hours. Is this unusual? I've only been here a few months so this could be one situation where the newbie is the only one who takes issues with things idk.
Also, I just wanted to say I wiped my account history because I didn't want to create a throwaway and I don't want my work to possibly see this post.
