My company asked everyone to donate money for a ‘give back’ project

I work for a massive company and recently they boasted about having the best Quarter ever and then a few minutes later asked everyone to donate $5-25 for a project. Of course this is extremely sleezy and I do not know of anyone that would actually donate but it had me thinking. Is this a way for us to help pay their taxes for them? Kind of like when Walmart asks you to ‘round up’ change but in reality it’s just helping them donate enough to help them on their taxes. They tried to cast vision like “Together, we can change the world… and because of hard working employees like you, we can be the best… etc.” Has anyone else ever had their own company ask for money?
