my company refuses to let me work anywhere else during the days i’m not scheduled to work

I’m a pharmacist in the U.K. , I work three full days a week at the branch that I manage. Recently I enquired to the superintendents that I am in interested in being a Locum , not necessarily within the company , but with others or independents. They came back to me and said that it’s a ‘conflict of interest’ ( I don’t understand how??) , and said whilst I am employed with them I can not work anywhere else. I just simply can’t understand how they can dictate what I do in my free days. I am contracted to work these three days with them and nothing else. Are they just allowed to refuse without any proper reason??
